Friday, August 23, 2024, 12:00 PM
Join us to commemorate this feast day with a simple Holy Eucharist in the church at 12:00 p.m. All are welcome.
St. Bartholomew's feast day falls on August 24. Because that date is a Saturday this year, we will celebrate it at Incarnation on Friday, August 23.

Bartholomew is named as one of the Twelve, Jesus' core group of disciples, in the gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. He is again listed among the Twelve in Acts 1:13, showing that he was a witness to the resurrection and ascension of Jesus.
The Gospel of John does not provide a list of the names of the Twelve. However, Bartholomew is sometimes identified with Nathanael, a character who becomes a disciple early in John's gospel and seems to be portrayed as one of the Twelve (see John 21:2). The name "Bartholomew" is a patronymic meaning "son of Tolmai," meaning that Bartholomew may indeed have had another name. John's gospel introduces Nathanael as a friend of Philip, and Bartholomew is coupled with Philip in the lists of disciples in Matthew, Mark, and Luke.
Tradition suggests that Bartholomew may have preached the good news of Jesus in India or Armenia and that he died as a martyr--according to legend, by being skinned alive. He is famously depicted holding his own skin in Michelangelo's fresco The Last Judgment in the Sistine Chapel, with his face a self-portrait of Michelangelo.
